Unique hand-sewn lampshades

If you are searching for truly special, traditionally-made, unique lampshades that are made by a person, rather than in a factory, you have come to the right place! I make stunning lampshades in my studio near Ashford, Kent. Whether creating a beautiful original lampshade or delicately restoring an antique lampshade to its former glory, your lampshade will be individually handcrafted to your specification.

All The Lampshade Lady's traditional lampshades are hand-sewn (as opposed to merely "handmade" or "hand-pleated" which are glued together, by hand). Because I hand-stitch each layer of fabric to the frame, attention to detail is guaranteed and the finish of each lampshade is always outstanding.

My rigid lampshades are entirely made by hand (not machine). Again, attention to detail is paramount and the finish of each lampshade is always of the highest quality.

Lights Up!

I make lampshades for a range of discerning private clients and businesses including interior designers, luxury hotels, top-end retailers and antique dealers in the UK and overseas. Whichever lampshade you require to complement your decor, my traditional and rigid lampshades, whether for table or standard lights, wall lights, pendants or chandeliers, will set the mood in ways that off-the-shelf lampshades simply cannot.

You will experience an entirely different level of service too. My method is to talk things through meticulously, understanding precisely what you would like, before using superior fabrics, linings and trimmings to create bespoke lampshades, or re-cover lampshades, that exceed your expectations.

All the lampshades are made at The Lampshade Lady's studio near Ashford in Kent.

Please make an appointment if you would like to visit the studio.

Hand Sewn, Traditional Lampshades

Hand Sewn, Traditional Lampshades

Imagine the pleasure of designing your own bespoke, hand-sewn lampshade, creating a beautiful heirloom piece that will delight you for years to come.

Whether you choose to have your lampshade made with a plain (tailored); knife pleated; box pleated; loose pleated (gathered around the base, knife pleated around the top); false pleated; gathered or swathed cover (to mention a few of the available options) The Lampshade Lady uses the traditional method of hand-stitching each layer to the frame, ensuring the best quality - for a similar cost to mass-produced, "handmade" lampshades that are glued-together.

Handmade, Contemporary Lampshades

Card-Backed Lampshades

Handcrafted to your specification, my popular rigid lampshades can be made from fabric or paper in a variety of shapes including round (ranging from drum to cylinder to coolie), rectangular, square, oval as well as other bespoke shapes. Demi-lune lampshades for wall lights and candle-clip lampshades for chandeliers and wall lights are also available.

I have a large choice of special linings for rigid lampshades including double-sided linings for fabric or paper lined lampshades.  I also make rigid lampshades with additional finishes such as bound edges, inset trimming, scalloped edges or lacing.

Lampshade Repair Service

Lampshade Re-covering Service

If you have a lampshades which is the right shape and size but the colour is wrong, or if you have a lampshade in poor condition, The Lampshade Lady can help.

I am proud to offer a re-covering, re-lining and re-trimming service to bring your lampshade back to its former, glorious self.

Re-covering your lampshade requires the same skills and time as making a new lampshade. It will probably cost more to re-cover your lampshade than buying a factory-made, glued-together lampshade from the high street or online but it will, undoubtedly, be the right size, shape and fitting; not to mention nicer - and unique!

Lampshade Fabrics and Trimmings

Lampshade Fabrics & Trimmings / COM

There is an excellent choice of carefully selected fabrics including different types and weights of silk (in hundreds of colours) and other popular fabrics including velvet, chiffon, satin, taffeta, linen and cotton to choose from at the studio and I offer a sample service for those who cannot visit.

I also have an extensive selection of beautiful trimmings that I have specifically picked for lampshades.

Alternatively you can supply your own fabric ("Customer's Own Material" / “COM”) and trimmings for your bespoke lampshade if that is your preference - I am happy to guide you through the selection process to ensure their suitability.

Lampshade Diffusers

I stock a range of translucent lampshade diffusers. These can be left plain or I can cover them with fabric to complement or contrast with your lampshade.

Ready-Made Lampshades, Lamps and Accessories

There is a limited selection of one-off, ready-made traditional and contemporary lampshades at the studio. I also have a selection of pre-loved table and standard lamps available to buy. Shade carriers, harp fittings, standard plugs, round pin plugs, converters (reducing Edison Screw to bayonet cap size), spiders (adapting duplex fittings for use as pendants) and other lamp and lampshade accessories are also stocked.

Re-wiring, Converting Objects into Lamps, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

I re-wire table and standard lamps and stock lamp holders in a variety of different finishes as well as a good selection twisted silk flex. If you have an object you would like converted into a lamp or if you have a lamp that needs re-wiring please bring it to my studio.

I am PAT certified and can test most types of standard and table lamps.
